Religious emblems are faith formation programs for youth in the Scouting program. Different programs exist that are tailored to the developmental and educational levels of the youth. Programs for Catholic Cub Scout youth include: Light of Christ (1st and 2nd grade) and Parvuli Dei (3rd, 4th and 5th grade). Additional emblems are also available for older scouts. There are also emblems for nearly any faith or Christian denomination & we would love to assist you in finding one!
To register for Pack 818's Religious Emblem's program, please submit the FACTS form and pay the $20 fee. The fee includes the workbook, application fee, knot patch for the uniform, and the Religious Emblem medal. Our Religious Emblem Coordinator will be in touch to get you started once you've completed the FACTS form.
What is the time commitment?
The emblems programs for elementary age youth are facilitated and guided by parents or grandparents and the programs are designed to be done at home in the family setting. The material will need to be discussed as specific to one’s family and God is explored as seen from a family perspective. No specific training needs to be done by a parent wishing to lead his/her child to earn their religious emblem although your parish staff or clergy could assist you if you have questions. Typically, about 30 minutes a week for 10-12 weeks is more than sufficient to complete the workbook.
Where do I obtain the materials needed to complete a Religious Emblem program?
Workbooks are available through our Pack’s Religious Emblem Coordinator, Cubmaster, or Committee Chair. Please contact Joe or Stephanie Natale to get started.
Now that my child has finished his/her emblems programs, what do I do next?
At the back of most of the workbooks is an emblem application form. The application is completed and signed by the parent. Parents will then notify the Pack’s Religious Emblem Coordinator who will arrange for a group meeting of all applicants with a parish priest. Once all the signatures have been obtained stating that the child successfully completed the program, the application form (not the whole workbook) along with the emblem fee is submitted to the Diocese of Orange Catholic Committee on Scouting.
How does my child receive their Religious Emblem?
In the Diocese of Orange, you can either choose to have your child presented with their emblems at a Diosean-wide Bishop’s Scout Mass (usually the last Saturday in Jan.) or you can have the emblem presented at a meaningful Mass in your home parish.
What is the cost of the Religious Emblem Program?
The Pack feels strongly that these programs support a scout’s “Duty to God” and as such, subsidizes the cost for scouts. The Pack charges $20 per scout per Religious Emblem. This cost includes the workbook, application fee, knot patch for the uniform, and the Religious Emblem medal.
The earning of a religious emblem can be a significant growth experience for a young person. They will have taken a step in their religious formation and understanding of God. This is a valuable achievement and worth the effort. Please encourage your sons and daughters to use these programs to develop their “Duty to God”.
Complete books are due October 1st after which a group meeting with a pastor will be arranged for participating scouts.
